Is video game audio badly mixed?

This is a weird question, but lately I've noticed that when playing games on my very basic 3.0 speaker setup (Elac Uni-Fi speakers and a Yamaha RX-V781) the audio is "okay".

But when watching movies it's really good, with seemingly much more clarity, more bass and much more nuance in the audio image.

So are games just badly mixed compared to high end movies, or are the current crop of consoles just bad at outputting stuff? Or am I doing something wrong with my setup?

Sound design has never been better in video games.

What setup and settings are you using?

Sony XBR-65Z9D / Oppo UDP-203 / Marantz SR7011 / Def Tech 9060 Series

Setup is Elac Uni-Fi towers (UF5 I think they're called) and a Elac center channel, also Uni-Fi.

They're going into a Yamaha RX-V781, where I've set everything to "Straight" (so it's the closets to the original intended mix I can come). Dynamic Range is set to Standard and I've done the AVR calibration with the mic that comes with the unit.

All my consoles (Xbox One, Playsation 4, Switch) send out PCM, which I understand will have the consoles send out every audio channel available from the game, and let the AVR do the downmixing to 3.0.

The games I've been spending time with lately have been Yakuza 6, Spider-Man and Cuphead.
