Budget Bookshelves

Hello All,

I am looking to upgrade my LCR. I'm currently running a set of Monitor Audio Radius 90s for LR and the Radius 180 for center.

I am constantly annoyed by the holes in the midbass and midrange and considering upgrading to something somewhat budget friendly.

On my radar so far is the ELAC Debut 6.2. Are they still the budget bookshelf kings or should I be looking at anything else?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I just bought the L/R off Amazon last week for $185 and honestly these are some of the best (budget) speakers i have ever purchased.

I have yet to pair it with the 6.2 Center though. I am still using on old Klipsch center, which sounds fine, but I want them to all compliment each other for the best quality.

I'm still kicking myself for not just picking them up between Black Friday and Xmas when they were reportedly selling for $150/pair.

Do you have them paired up w/ a sub? If so which sub are you using and how do you like the way they blend?

I do have them paired with My Klipsh R110. Paired with the sub, I personally love it, and honestly can't wait to get the center channel. However, the room I am in is a bit smaller, so that could be a factor.

If your are on a budget, honestly can't go wrong with the 6.2's

I can’t remember exactly but I thought I heard people saying that the B6.2’s lacked in those exact places you mentioned you would like an improvement in.

If you want a real top budget performer, the Sony Cores at $75 a pair are really hard to beat.

I liked JBL’s Arena 130’s for $99 also.

Wavecrest HVL’s for $150 a pair. Designed by Dave Fabrikant at Ascend.

The Elacs Debut 6.2 are very good speakers. There are also a lot of very good speakers in the $299 range so you should be able to find something you like. Check out the offerings from these companies:

Ascend Acoustics
Hsu Research
Emotiva
NHT (available through Amazon)
Philharmonic Audio.

You can also find some good deals on Boston Acoustics, Canton, and other great brands at Accessories 4 Less.

http://www.accessories4less.com

If you look around the forums you will see a lot of great recommendations so you can find the speaker that works best for you.

I wouldn't pay $299 for the Elac B6.2's. At $149 they cannot be beat, but @ the $300 range there's a lot of bookshelf speakers that give them competition.

I highly recommend Ascend Acoustics CBM-170SE. I have owned the pre SE models for 14 years, and for the money they are amazing. I just did a in home comparison of my 170’s vs. KEF Q150’s and for my ears the 170’s were superior in all ways. I would imagine the SE version would be vastly superior.

Good Luck!

I've tried the Elacs(uc5 & .2s) infinity 162s, the Kefs q150, Sony cores, klipsch. Honestly if I only heard one set before the others, I would've not demo'd anything else. This set(was) the Sony cores. Phenomenally crafted and at the black Friday prices they were the best price/performance. The q150s sounded a little better but not by much and the Sony handles bs better while doing everything that the q150 does just as good. The elacs in general sounded good but I personally rather a more forward kind of speaker. After purchasing the debut 2.0 originally at just about retail and then at the fire pit sale prices, I could never justify spending anymore than that. The uc5 otoh was very good and is a great buy at the last sale price. But it and the debut 2.0s are just harder to drive. The infinity speakers was good but not as clear to me because unfortunately I had the klipsch bookshelves at the time. The klipsch(600m) did everything well and better than all of them, which is why I kept them. But if I had to put them in order especially where having a sub is concerned the elacs would be dead last. The Klipsch, Kef and Sony can play well with each other. You will be able to tell the difference if you've got the ears for it, but they can work together.

It might be worth it to add in the JBL Studio 200’s. The 230’s can be found for $250 commonly. $220’s at $200...?

And those Wavecrests possibly? Or maybe there was a motif I’m missing from this list?

That's only a partial part of my list; the 230s are on the list I didn't add as I didn't want to go over $299 msrp.

I should add the Wavecrests and haven't in the past as they don't have a center option but as they are designed by Ascend Acoustics' designer I'm guessing that, on a budget, the Ascend 200 SE would make a great "matching" center.

Thanks for all the suggestion folks.

I think the most difficult part is that personal preference plays such a large part in the selection process.
There are loads of options and of course the I think the best way to pick which sounds best to me is by auditioning them. Unfortunately that is not an option for many of the suggested speakers since a lot of them are not available near by.

Makes sense. I’m guessing the shipping is the reason that the CBM-170’s miss the bar? Or missed ur “crop” of the list?

Yep, $322 with shipping.

The list is for speakers $500/pair and below and has gotten huge with AVS input as there are so many great choices out there as you know.

One of these days I'll loan you my LX16s and when my buddy is out of town and I'm feeding his cats I'll loan you his Concept 20s!

No need, how many speakers do you have on hand.

I believe JBL 230 and Ascend 340.

I would expect that in 2.1 it would make for an interesting shootout.

JBL’s go back in a week or two. No intention of keeping them and having troubling selling them Had them for quite a while, the Christmas extended return has been quite a treat.

Something like Polk S20’s and Klipsch RP150’s would be a good comparison.

I'm thinking of giving the ascend 340 a shot. Trying out the chane a2.4 right now and it seems a little bright coming from the hsu hc1. Thinking the ascend might fall somewhere in the middle

I thought that the Chanes actually fell on the warm side. I haven’t heard them myself, but if they are indeed bright to you, then I’m almost sure the Ascends would be even brighter with them being extremely neutral.

Gotcha, I had no idea. Looks pretty flat other than that dip in the midrange. Wonder why it comes off as bright? Because he’s accustomed to the HSU’s?

Trying to give the chane a shot, but right now seems to expose more sibilance than the hsu's. I know it's in the source, but it's not as noticed on the hc1. Funny thing is, at first the hsu's seemed to bring out more sibilance compared to my old paradigm 5 se's. They were before paradigm switched to aluminum dome tweeters . The old vifa silk dome seemed to mellow everything out. But lately every speaker I try, I end up going back to the hsu's. Lol
