Used JVC RS40 or ?

I am looking to get a projector to hold me over till the 2019 ones under 2500. I would really like to get 4k/HDR in the future. I am looking to be using this for my 135" screen in a complete black cave. Walls are black velvet covered.

Should I get an used JVC RS40 for about 400 locally or get something else to hold me over. I used to have an epson 8350 and that was the last projector I owned about a year or so ago.

What else should I possibly get

For $400 if it is still working without any flaws it might be a good deal, I definitely wouldn't pay any more then that for it. Be prepared to struggle with keeping lamps in it. The RS46 is the oldest JVC where the lamps are reliable.

"Smart enough to know better, to old to care" ------ Dedicated Bat Cave Home Theater, JVC RS49U/Mitsubishi HC7900DW Projector, 110" 16:9 Jamestown screen with variable power masking for CIW 2.50:1 to 16:9, Marantz 7009 with 7.1.4 Atmos with Ohm mains,3 DIY Subs (2 15" (1 ported, 1 sealed and a 12" 4th order bandpass), 1 DIY butt kicker, Custom Built HTPC, 18TB DroboFS NAS

I’m in a similar boat. I’m looking to buy a used 1080p projector just to get my feet wet having only had TVs before. And I’m really struggling with setting a value. People seem very proud of these units and appear to justify high asking prices based upon original MSRP. And I’m really not sure about spending a lot of money for what ultimately is 5-6 old out of warranty tech.

Are the x35’s and above generally considered reliable?

the x35 is the same as the RS46, HERE IS A LIST. I wouldn't pay much over $1200 for anything older then the RS400. Many sellers are way over priced on these older JVC's.

I still own an RS40, and aside from the original factory lamp, I've gotten about 2000 hrs out of each lamp after.
