Top Blu-rays for 2018

AVS Forum Blu-ray Reviewer Ralph Potts offers his picks for some of 2018’s best Blu-ray releases.

It's hard to believe that we are at the beginning of 2019. As in years past, when I began thinking about assembling this list, there wasn't an abundance of titles coming to the forefront of my mind. But, once I began going over this year's reviews, I didn't have any problem coming up with a cache of titles that make worthy additions to the collections of enthusiasts. 2018 was indeed a good year for home video releases.

I will offer my picks for the Blu-ray releases with top notch audio/video as well as a list of some of my favorite films that were released this year on Blu-ray. The list will include Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray titles. These are not in any particular order nor is this list by any means intended to be comprehensive. I have included a link to the review of each entry, which can be accessed by clicking on the title. Some titles crossover between audio/video and favorite film. In those cases, the link will only be provided once.

2018 Picks for Best Audio/Video Quality:

Highly Recommended Films Released on Blu-ray in 2018:

Coco

Blade Runner 2049

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Hostiles

Hereditary

Blackkklansman

Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Avengers: Infinity War

Sicario: Day of the Soldado

Blindspotting

Eighth Grade

Upgrade

Isle of Dogs

Disobedience

Small Town Crime

Darkest Hour

The Florida Project

Brad's Status

Ready Player One

The Foreigner

I, Tonya

Molly's Game

Game Night

A Fantastic Woman

There you have it—my picks for some of this year's best Blu-ray releases. I'd love to hear your thoughts as well as your own picks for 2018. And I would be more than happy to entertain recommendations that could be added to the list based on a group consensus.

Excellent list Ralph! Would this list also fall into the UHD umbrella or would that be a different list? Thank you.

Sweet!.
I look forward to this every year so I can compare what I have to what's on your list...it's usually about 50/50 and includes some I have yet to check out...
Thanks for the work and the effort you put into your posts/reviews!

Ralph,

Great list(s). We have almost all of the UHD's, except the two Horror and the Maze Runner film. As we added 3D capability last year to our equipment, we focus mostly on those when we buy BD's. Good thing we live in Europe now, because here the 3D format is still alive and kicking. Even found Venom on 3D. Crazy how one gets to over 100 3D BD's in a year.
Cheers and keep 'em reviews coming. Always enjoy your take on the films.

Greetings

I think a list for not so topnotch would be shorter - and that's a good thing!

I agree - great list! I have most of these and completely agree. A Quiet Place was the most surprising in terms of audio - it felt like my sub was ripping a hole in the walls when the creature was around! The Matrix looks and sounds amazing in Dolby Vision/Atmos as well and really blew me away.

The other addition I'd make, is the Criterion remastered version of Silence of the Lambs (Lee Weber's review). It's one of the most amazing remasters I've seen and the fact that it's one of my favorite movies doesn't hurt.

Yeah sometimes they really nail those 4k remasters. I have that one and it does indeed look amazing. I just ordered the special edition blue ray of the 80's classic Fright Night which is also a 4k remaster. Looking forward to that one...
