I concur. This movie is going to definitely be one of my demo movies. At least a handful of times my guests noted how awesome the sound was. I think they were mostly impressed by the copious amounts of bass, but one of my more picky guests noted how good the dynamics were. I'm watching it tomorrow with my kids, so it's a great excuse to watch it again and revel in the A/V greatness.

If I ever manage to move my living room furniture around so that I can get some honkin' big tower speakers, I may have to make sure that none of my neighbors are home as well

Sure I'll watch it a couple more times with friends this weekend and maybe things will grow on me, but so far it's not the movie magic I wanted out of it.
I just bought the audio book from Audible. It's next on my "reading" list.

I forced my Oppo into HDR mode and watched a few scenes. My LG C7 was calibrated for HDR but DV calibration wasn't available when I bought it. The HDR image was a bit warmer than DV but was somewhat darker. The DV image was brighter and had more depth and dimension than the HDR image. Characters stood out a bit more. DV definitely gets the nod for overall viewing experience. I also sampled the Blu-ray and it is state of the art for 1080p resolution. Those that haven't moved up to 4k yet will have nothing to complain about.

Forgot to add that the 57 minute "Game Changer: Cracking the Code" making of bonus feature is very good. It's well organized and entertaining.

Vulture.com has list of all of the cultural references in the movie. It is very long and you would probably have to watch the film dozens of times, some in slow motion, to catch most of them.

Damn I want this packaging so badly for my US 4K version.

Spoiler!
The receiver goes off as soon as the bike hits the ground every time I listen at loud volume. I thought there was an issue with my amp or my receiver, but I can't seem to replicate it with any other movie I own. I just want to know if anyone else has had something similar happen with their copy.

Other than that, I love the movie. Loved the book more, but the movie is good on its own.

Hi Ralph

Thanks for the excellent review. Wife and I came away with the feeling of good ole cinema excellence! I for one am so glad Spielberg is still making movie magic as we feel Ready Player One more than delivered. The cast, light plot and gobs of good nostalgia all contributed well to the movie. This was just sit back and enjoy the movie and while not going for greatness I still feel greatness was pulled off. The A/V are of reference quality beyond question and Dolby vision was definitely worth the wait, speaking of the Atmos mix! it placed one in the action like no other.

Grandson is going to get a kick out of this when he see's it and I'm looking forward to many playback opportunities

+1. Grabbed this from redbox last night and what a fun HT ride! Audio/video top notch and I liked the movie. Would love to check it out in 3d (can't remember the last 3d movie I watched!). Do any of the 3d import options have Atmos audio and region free?

Blu-ray audio is demo material. Very well done. The rest is good too. Maybe because I'm old enough to have been exposed to the 70's, 80's and 90's entertainment industry. Gave me some flashbacks.

Check your speaker connections at the receiver. I’ll bet there is a stray wire touching the chassis. A loud enough peak could send enough of a current into the receiver to trigger a safety shutdown.

watched this last night after finding the Target exclusive one (uhd) at my local store. Great movie, and one of the best looking titles in my collection

but my Sony x700 player did freeze 2x last night playing the title. I didn't see any fingerprints on the disc, but cleaned it anyway after the first freeze. Anyone else experience this, especially on the Sony UHD player ?

Come to think of it, my Oppo 203 had one small glitch about 30 minutes into the movie (UHD disc). It didn't freeze to the point that I needed to take it out, but it locked pixels for about 1 second, then continued. I had forgotten about that.

do you have the target edition, the best buy, or the standard UHD release disc ? sure sounds like it's an issue with the disc itself

I watched it again with a different group of friends. It is clearly catered to those whose formative years were in the 80's. I absolutely love that. Each time I watch it I find new references to movies, music, games, etc. It's just such a fun ride and the story line happens to be solid as well. Spielberg has a way of making you feel like a kid again while watching the movie. I tried to analyze the AV side of things a bit more this time and I can say that the CG stuff was super crisp and vibrant, but the real-life parts were inconsistent - some scenes were razor sharp, whereas others were a bit soft. The audio was (insert 80's lingo here - rad, choice, boss, gnarly, etc.)! One of my friends asked if I had subs below my couch!
