So all that speculation about the new ubp-700 being a 'cheap' budget uhd blu ray player were false? is it at least as good as last year's 800 with the added advantage of supporting DV in future? From what I read the 800 played hdr10 quite well. So if this players's hdr10 quality is comparable it should be worth considering. is there any other 'high end' model that sony would release later this year?

And people here so far seem to be talking about streaming quality. streaming for a blu ray player is a secondary function, the main is playing discs. how is the 4k uhd hdr10 blu ray disc playback, has anyone tried it? is disc loading fast? is it region A only? any issues with sending bitstream atmos output from discs to AVR?

Disc loading on X700 is very fast. I tested Blade Runner 2049 and It, both in 4K HDR and they loaded very fast, at least much more faster than my Oppo 105D loading HD Blue Rays.

It is a budget player, they just reduced the feature set slightly and the size. Budget does not mean less PQ. You either need everything something like the Oppo and high end Panny do, or you do not.

Sony uses an off the shelf mediatek chip from what I understand, and I have owned many over the years. They tend to output accurately and have very nice image. It also has dual HDMI outs which is nice if you need it.

Best I can tell this is an X800 that is smaller, and getting DV. Also doesnt have 5ghz wifi, but not biggie that I can tell.

don't know whether to get this or wait for something better, sony hasn't announced that they'll release any other high end player this year, but they might down the line. also since dv is not supported yet, i'd at least wait till the dv firmware is out and read the reviews comparing this player's dv quality to the oppo 203/205.

I'm a big fan of Oppo players. I had in the past a DV-980H, a DV-983H, BDP-93 and now a BDP-105D. When I got the 105D i got it because it had Netflix and TIDAL. Of course, I use it for Blue Ray disc movies, CDs (music) and streaming with TIDAL and from my NAS. Unfortunately, Oppo stoped updates for the Oppo Media App so TIDAL got supper glitchy to the point that I had to buy a Bluesound Node 2 for streaming TIDAL and from music stored in my NAS. BTW, The Node 2 is by far the best streaming device I have ever owned. Anyways, my intention was to purchase a budget player for my bedroom and an Oppo 203 for my living room setup (I'm keeping the 105D as a CD transport). So I got the X700 for the bedroom and I'm so impressed with this budget player that I might changed my mind and get either a X800 or another X700 for the living room instead an Oppo 203 that doesn't have any app.

I don't think getting the X800 would be best as it won't support DV, which right now might not effect you but could be the difference in a few years when it's mainstream. I don't feel like Sony is going to pull a LG and say they will have DV support and then never be able to follow up with it like they did on the LG 970. This is also not Sony's first player to the market so they had plenty of testing/samples to ensure they could actually keep their promise on the DV. Obviously they could of made a huge goof and end up not being able to make it work but I would see that as a very horrible decision on Sony's end after already seeing the effect it had on LG and future updates.

Personally, I'm 100% confident that the X700 will get Dolby Vision support! However, the big question is will it support non-Sony sets with other Dolby Vision profile(s).

I'm not worry about DV support in my Living Room setup because I'm running a projector (Sony HW40ES) which is going to be upgrade to a 4K projector by 2019 and projectors are not likely to get DV support anytime soon, if ever so not a deal breaker for me the lack of DV.

Quick question...Looking to buy a Sony Blu-ray...either X800 or the new X700. I have the XBR65A1E, which one do you suggest?
Thank you, Jerry

Not sure if the Dolby Vision firmware update that Sony released a few days ago was fixed and now the A1E is getting Dolby Vision support over HDMI and USB but in any case, I would get the X700 because at least we know that it will get DV support in a future firmware update as already announced by Sony at CES.

I have both the 800 and 700, Id grab the X700 and wait on Dolby Vision. Audio and Video wise it seems to be the same player. Just that the 700 will get DV and the 800 won't (according to Sony).

Yesterday while testing some UHD blue rays, specifically Blade Runner 2049, the X700 freeze to the point that I had to unplug the power for it to get back to life. I need to admit that I was doing a lot of stuff at that time like changing scenes, fast forwarding, changing settings on the fly, etc. It was more like a torture test but after that incident it worked really well during normal operation. I lost count of the times that that happened to my $1300 Oppo 105D so I find this kinds of things pretty normal.

No Dolby Vision support yet, for anything, until the summer when the DV firmware is released. VUDU streams in 4k, but no HDR (not even HDR10).

"VUDU streams in 4k"

Yes VUDU can stream 4K. Does the VUDU app on the x700 do 4K? Two different things.

The x800 streaming lags behind in this regard. Will the x700?

VUDU app on the X700 does stream in 4K and Atmos, no HDR. Netflix does stream in 4K as well, not sure about HDR, though. I have already tested them and posted a picture yesterday. Here are more photos of VUDU and Netflix.

got the player delivered today, took the past hour or so to do some quick A-B testing against UP970. Sony on top, LG on bottom (with the pause sign on upper right). Same HDR settings on C6 upchanged, same settings on Denon receiver unchanged, swapped the same hdmi cable between players, pics taken (crushed) by same iphone SE camera with no additional image adjustment, top-bottom processed (crushed) by the same photo app with no additional adjustment. tested a few scenes from Earth: one amazing day, Pacific Rim, Warcraft, Westworld season 1, all in HDR10, some of the discs are mastered in DV, but can't see them yet without DV support.

Picture quality looked pretty equal, to me. If there were more pronounced differences in in-person PQ before being crushed by iphone, nothing really stood out to me. but if you have better suggestion "you gotta test the scene at xx:xx:xx mark, it's dead giveaway!" I'm all game...

* I don't pretend to own a pair of eagles-eye equipped by videophiles, average at best, I could very well not see the differences when it's right in front of me, keep that in mind.

So, between the two, I prefer Sony, based entirely on personal preferences:
1. Better UI, even though x700's UI isn't superb, it's decent and good enough compares to UP970's aesthetic that take you right back to early-2000s-dot-com-era, this is purely personal taste. (actually my favorite UI is philips 7502's, by what I have seen)
2. X700 offers a lot more finer settings adjustment options, to which, others do legitimately appreciate UP970's ease-of-use with less options to mess with.
3. More useful streaming apps. UP970 has 2: netflix and youtube, X700 has in addition: vudu and amazon prime, basically the only ones I care about. I can get dd+ atmos out of the Vudu app (no HDR yet as mentioned by others) as of now, assuming (big if) Vudu will update once DV-firmware has been delivered to the player, that would finally trump streaming from my TV (DV, yes; Atmos, no ARC support). Will I eventually get the coveted HDR and Atmos combo through various streaming apps with X700? big if, if these app developers will follow-through, but I have better chances with X700 since the apps are here at least to begin with.
4. smaller form factor. love it, opens up just enough shelf space for me to place another gadget I've planned for. slight better built quality by touch, but nothing of significance.

Everything else are all about the same:
1. both are waiting for DV firmware, judging by current HDR10 pq, hard to say how much of a difference future-DV pq will be, that's basically within the realm of force majeure...
2. didn't pay too much attention to audio, Atmos is there, DTS-X is there, nothing of significant difference jumped out at me playing the same discs.
3. USB playback is also all the same, tried with my USB drive with atmos/dts-x demos: just like UP970, X700 won't play TrueHD audio wrapped in MKV container, dd+ atmos in mp4 is fine, TrueHD in m2ts is fine, DTS-X wrapped in MKV is fine.
4. 3D for both players, pq appeared very similar to me as well.

My little quickie is only intended to serve the average consumers deciding between the 2 players

Hi,
My X700 will be delivered today, any settings that I need to change right out of the box? It will be via HDMI to my Denon x4300 and Sony TV A1E.

Thanks, Jerry

It's basically ready out of the box for bitstream, not like the X800 that you have to change some parameters to get bitstream. I would recommend you to check on the Youtube video posted on post #80 .

Looks like there is a new Firmware Update released 01/31/2018. I'm going to check my X700 to see if that's the version I got when turned ON the X700 for the first time on Friday.

Looks like a firmware update was released today - or is that the update that the player did when it was first connected to the Internet?

I wonder what they mean by "network streaming services". VUDU 4k with HDR perhaps?

You're too fast. I was typing my question as you answered it Soo.. before the update, did it not have Netflix, Amazon, YouTube and VUDU?

Yeah, when you kinda first update it I think it adds the current versions of the apps.

Yes. I already checked that. Mine is running M43.R.0104.

BTW, something weird is happening sometimes with VUDU app and 4K content. Most of the time, when turn ON the X700 and go directly to VUDU app and play any 4K movie, I get the warning that my TV is not HDCP 2.2 enable so the movie is going to play in HDX. Then I get out of VUDU app, go to Netflix, play a movie in 4K and all is good. Then open VUDU app again and it plays all movies in UHD 4K with no HDCP 2.2 warning... All my HDMI cables are Amazon UHD certified, my receiver is HDCP 2.2 in all inputs and outputs and my TV as well. In fact, I have no issues playing UHD Blue Rays or Netflix 4K content, this issue only happens with VUDU app.
