"A Beautiful Planet" arrived today by FedEx from Amazon.com, and the M9500 does indeed detect and display "HDR10+" in the INFO banner.

However, for Samsung Q9FN TV owners expecting confirmation that their TV is capable of displaying HDR10+ dynamic metadata, guess again! It's just like Amazon Prime HDR10+...we have to trust that our TVs are capable of receiving and displaying HDR10+ dynamic metadata over HDMI 2.0b.

My set continues to display the regular "HDR" tag in the "INFO banner," as well as on the "Home" menu (see attached). I'm running the latest Q9FN firmware available for North America.

I have yet to watch the film, but I thought some people would be interested in my initial findings.

That's not true. The player has two sections in the info banner. The top part shows the source info. The bottom shows the output. Since the bottom part is showing HDR10+, then your setup supports HDR10+. If your TV didn't support HDR10+, then the bottom part would show just "HDR10."

This is the Q9, right? Do you happen to have any older Samsung TV models that you can test compatibility for?

You are right! I forgot that the bottom half is a result of communicating with the display. My KS9000 only displays HDR in the output section of the M9500 INFO banner (see attached). So then Samsung has yet to update the 2017-2018 TV "INFO banners" with an HDR10+ tag. Strange considering HDR10+ is at the heart of Samsung's marketing campaign. Oh well, thanks for the idea to try it on an unsupported device.

Ordered up 2 Samsung Blu-ray players for my kids for Christmas. One turned out to be defective.
While looking for a replacement, Samsung Dealer says he's sold out, and when he tried to re-order, he was told Samsung is no longer going to be manufacturing Blu-ray players!

Thankyou very very much for doing this. It's disappointing, but not at all surprising (this is Samsung remember), that the TV does NOT clearly show "HDR10+" on its Info banner when it is definitely receiving HDR10+ over HDMI. And this is a model 2 years after the 2016 models which were promised to support HDR10+. They are incredibly shy about HDR10+ aren't they?

Strangely shy about it, I agree. Maybe one day we'll have an "aha" moment for whatever reason—or not, who knows.

The disc looks good, and I'm glad to add it to my collection, but it will be nice as more HDR10+ films get released on disc for comparison. Over the weekend I'll watch the HD companion disc, but the bulk of filming takes place inside the ISS so there is a lot of white. Not complaining at all...glad to add it to my documentary collection.

If it's true, it'll be obvious in less than a month when they have no new model at CES. And it would be astonishing.

Are they saying no blu-ray players or no 4k blu-ray players? If they get out of everything all together that would be interesting, is digital really that far ahead?

I buy films that I consider important to add to my collection, and digital is good enough for the rest. I'd estimate my library is 1:5 (disc to digital), with no intentions of ever going completely digital unless there is no choice in the matter.

According to a conversation I had with an exec who wishes to remain "unnamed", they are "out of the Bluray Player business". The last batches of the remaining 2017 M8500's are shipping in the first quarter of 2019. No reason was given.

Very interesting.

Btw DVDs, blu-rays, and 4K blu-rays are all fully digital and always have been. So "streaming" is a much better term than "digital" if you want to refer to non-physical media. From a provider than could potentially vanish with your collection if they go bust of course, it's a no-brainer to me that I want physical media for best quality video and audio.

I'll try to remember to fit "streaming" into a sentence rather than loosely using "digital". Often times I type on the fly and later notice myself that I've used incorrect terminology...thanks for the correction.

I have an older Denon 4306 AVR. No DTS X etc. When I output PCM I get Ext. In 7.1 which is good. When I output bitstream as per the instructions on the Gladiator 4K disc with DTS X, the Denon only shows 5.1 digital inputs and matrix's the output to 7.1. What settings are most folks utilizing for those without a DTS X capable AVR? PCM or bitstream. FYI "auto" output acts the same as bitstream on the AVR.

SLOW fast forward and no resume play after stop?

A couple of quick questions on this box....

The 3x FF seems VERY slow, like only 5x. This takes FOREVER to find certain sections of DVDs. Is this normal?

Does it support Resume After Stop? My old Sammy BD player would start back up at the point of last "bookmark" if the box was turned off and back on. Is there a place that this needs to be turned on?

Thanks!

If his message had been "no need to buy an expensive Premium Certified cable because you can get a cheap Premium Certified cable", it would have been fine.

But he's saying "it doesn't matter", basically. Which is against all the experience here on this forum.

Your personal agenda against John has zero relevance to the topic at hand or the Comments that he's relaying from Samsung. If you wish to start a thread for why you don't like John because of a 2 year old article, feel free to do so. If he turns out to be wrong, I'm sure he will he will have an article about it , but it seems there is a deeper issue at hand that he cannot go into, or he breaks the trust that he has with his contacts, that apparently he's been told not to mention. John is the ONLY media person I know of that relays problems/issues from consumers directly to all of the big companies, so maybe cut a little slack here.

I don't have a "vendetta", that's a ludicrous thing to post. I am merely pointing out he's not always correct, so caution is needed, however well-intentioned. That article is an example. The HDMI 2.0 advice hasn't changed over the last two years so its publication date isn't relevant (except to add that he often updates things, so he ought to update that one if he has since learned). It's always been to start by eliminating as many problems as possible by using a cable which has passed the HDMI.org testing programme and displays the hologram. It's massively unhelpful for an article like that to be published. We here waste a lot of time persuading people to start by replacing their cables, persuading them that they do not need to spend a lot of money to get a cable which has been rated Premium Certified, and our hard work is hindered by articles like that.

For balance he has also been very helpful with contacting Samsung wrt their BBC iplayer fiasco (here) and recently Samsung's detailed response wrt their Technicolor White Point (here). I will not start a new thread on either his mistakes or the things he got right, thanks all the same

Picked one of these up, overall everything seems to work well so far. One question, does HDR work with Google play movies?

I've tried with one HDR movie in play movies and would get 4k but not HDR. HDR works fine in YouTube, I believe Google uses the same compression in YouTube and movies, also Google lists Samsung smart tv's (yes I know a disc player isn't a tv) as HDR compatible, making me hopeful that it's possible.

Why are the subtitles displayed in black when I´m playing a 4K Movie through a hard drive connected to the USB port? How do I change them to white? They´re white for a Blu-ray Movie on the hard drive as well on a USB stick, but for 4K Movies black and some parts are not visiable at all on the screen. They´re disappearing in the black bars.

Yes, I complained about the black subtitles via USB file playback multiple times on this thread, months ago. Don't hold your breath that it will ever be fixed. It wouldn't be all that hard for Samsung to change a few lines of code and make them white, but I guess they just don't care. That is why I have an Oppo and a Shield, because this player won't do proper subtitles on UHD file playback. The subtitles are also too large. They should offer a smaller size. Ultimately it doesn't matter what size they are, if they are BLACK and cannot be seen most of the time.
